The Waynewood School of Hope

ultural activities will supplement the Core Knowledge curriculum, and  will take place in each academic subject.  The cultural activities will use thematic and integrated lesson plans that channel through four areas:  Identity, Community, Practicality and Creativity.

Identity:  This component will focus on the children’s self-respect, value system and self-esteem through positive self-images and increased knowledge of cultural heritage. This will be addressed through teaching students with an emphasis placed on people and experiences that are relevant to and identifiable with their own experiences and self. Each subject of each grade will begin a weekly introduction of a civilization, nation, person, institution or event. The goal is to create an oasis of pride and self-respecting identity.

Creativity:  Creative activities are integrated throughout the curriculum for the expansion of the students’ mind and to produce higher order thinking skills.  Creative activities expand and nurture the imagination and develop the cognitive capabilities of students.

Practicality:  The activities are relevant to life skills, grounding and preparing the students for daily life.

Community:  The activities emphasis group work/community building.  With these activities, the students will get consistent practical experience  working  together and encouraging one another. This will encourage collective responsibility, teamwork, and expand the students’ mind to a global focus.
